Breast Cancer 2000 is a registered charity (No. SCO 30630), and was originated in March 2000 by our late chairperson, Doreen Don and two of her friends.

Doreen was diagnosed with breast cancer some 17 years ago and due to the excellent treatment she received at the Western Infirmary Breast Care Unit and The Beatson Oncology Centre she was determined to give something back to these units.

For nearly 10 years the charity has developed a strong body of company and individual supporters and at the  end of 2008 broke through the £600,000 barrier and we are very proud of the fact that no expenses are taken and 100% of the funds raised go to the above mentioned units.

We are fortunate in having Jenni Falconer as our Patron and she hosts our annual ball in the Glasgow Hilton each October ,which is our major fund raising event of the year.

Our Mission Statement is for patient care and comfort and to provide equipment and research into diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Allocation of the funds is done in collaboration with the relevant consultants and briefly below is a list of uses of the monies so far:-

  • The first two years of the charity’s fund raising was allocated to research projects undertaken by Dr. Robert Muir into earlier diagnosis of breast cancer.
  • Research by consultant pathologist,Dr. Liz Mallon, into HER2 an important factor in the subsequent treatment of tumours.
  • Purchase of “state of the art” electron microscope for use in the Pathology Lab, and digital cameras used in teaching facilities training new
    doctors .
  • Purchase of a portable ultrasonic detection machine for breast tumours.
  • 2006 - £100,000. was utilised in a new PET scanning procedure used before and after only one cycle of chemotherapy, complimented by needle biopsies at each stage  to compare if the specific tumour was responding or not .This procedure allows for more rapid response to individuals treatments.
  • 2007 - We donated a further £135,000 and £25,000 will be allocated initially to a large volume biopsy device  to speed up the process of diagnosis and will reach parts not easily attainable.
The second item purchased is a Portable Ultrasound Unit which can be used both in the Breast Clinic and in the operating theatre and thirdly a Digital specimen Radiography System allowing the Pathologist to locate the tumour very accurately.
  • A further £85,000 was handed over in January 2009 which is also in discussion with the relevant Consultants.
  • The WIP dinner raised £9000 but we do not allocate these funds until the year end , all the money raised is accumulated over the year and passed to the consultants in January the following year

Over and above the annual ball we run a small programme of events throughout the year.

  • Floral display by Jade Flowers
  • Dorothy Paul produced a play at the Eastwood Theatre “ A Happy Medium” for three nights in March 2008 and all profits went to the charity.
